Friday 19 Sep: Film Night - Black Bag

Friday 19th September: BLACK BAG [15] 93 mins – Thriller

National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) agent George Woodhouse (Michael Fassbender) faces a challenging assignment. There’s a mole in the agency with plans to activate a destructive cyber worm called Severus.

George is tasked with identifying the mole. His list of five suspects includes four of his agency friends and colleagues at the NCSC, with the fifth being his beloved wife Kathryn St. Jean (Cate Blanchett).

Why see it? Who doesn’t enjoy a good spy story?

“There is very little in the way of action . . . its pleasures lie in the dialogue, the twists, the reveals. It all leads to a delightful Agatha Christie-style drawing room denouement, in which the rat is exposed, their best-laid plans laid to waste. Like the film as a whole, it’s deliciously, lip-smackingly satisfying.”

There will be an interval during the showing. Subtitles will be displayed too.

All films are shown upstairs in Pelham Hall (directions at page bottom) in the bar area. Doors open at 7.15 pm and films start at 7.30 pm prompt. There is a £7 per head entry fee, payable on the door (cash or card). The bar will be open too.

Friday 17 Oct: The Penguin Lessons

Friday 17th October: THE PENGUIN LESSONS [12A] 111 mins – Drama

Disillusioned teacher Tom Michell (Steve Coogan) gets a job teaching English and Rugby in a school for rich kids in Buenos Aires. It’s 1976 and Argentina is controlled by a military dictatorship, but Tom is more interested in spending time on the beach than in either his pupils or the political situation.

During a weekend trip to Uruguay he rescues an orphaned penguin and smuggles it back into the school, little suspecting that this is the beginning of a personal and political awakening.

Why see it? It’s a quirky true-story heart warmer.

“Adapted from Tom Michell’s autobiographical book, The Penguin Lessons counters the inspirational teacher cliches with a bumbling charm that’s boosted considerably by a first-rate performance from the scene-stealing penguin.” The Guardian

Friday 21 Nov: Mr. Burton

Friday 21st November: MR. BURTON [12A] 124 mins – Drama/Biography

It’s 1942 and Richard Jenkins (Harry Lawtey) is at school in Port Talbot, caught between the pressures of an alcoholic father, a devastating war, and his own ambitions.

A new opportunity beckons when Richard’s natural talent for drama catches the attention of his teacher, Philip Burton (Toby Jones). The young man thrives under Philip’s strict tutelage and the guidance of a kindly landlady, Ma Smith (Lesley Manville). But as the acting world comes within Richard’s reach, the burden of his past risks holding him back forever.

Why see it? It’s a gripping account of the back story of Wales’s greatest actor.

“The performances from the two leads are impressive, with Lawtey deftly charting Richard’s progress from squeaky adolescent to adored stage smoothie, complete with trademark pout and mellifluous baritone. Jones finds wrenching sadness in the role of a teacher who once dreamt of writing for the stage and sees in Richard a conduit for his own unfulfilled life.” The Times

Friday 12 Dec: The Ballad of Wallis Island

Friday 12th December: THE BALLAD OF WALLIS ISLAND [12A] 99 mins – Comedy/Music

Charles (Tim Key), an eccentric lottery winner who lives alone on a remote island, dreams of getting his favourite musical duo, Mortimer-McGwyer (Carey Mulligan and Tom Basden), back together.

His fantasy quickly turns into reality when the bandmates and former lovers accept his invitation to play a private show at his home on Wallis Island. Old tensions resurface as Charles tries desperately to salvage his dream gig.

Why see it? For its charm.

“I loved pretty much every minute of this enormously engaging picture, which reminded me in some ways of Bill Forsyth's 1983 charmer Local Hero.” Daily Mail

There will be an interval during the showing. Subtitles will be displayed too.

Friday 18 Jul: Film Night - Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy

Friday 18th July: BRIDGET JONES: MAD ABOUT THE BOY [15] 124 mins – Comedy/Romance

Bridget Jones navigates life as a widow and single mum with the help of her family, friends, and former lover, Daniel (Hugh Grant).

Back to work and on the apps, she's pursued by a younger man (Leo Woodall) and maybe - just maybe - her son's science teacher (Chiwetel Ejiofor).

Why see it? It’s a heartfelt, charming return to the chaos surrounding the one and only Bridget Jones. You might even shed a few tears.

“This reunion with Bridget is a joy. Like a big old glass of pub wine, it might not be particularly complex or sophisticated but, my goodness, it hits the spot.” (The Guardian)

But Maria has already caught the unwanted attention of persistent paparazzi eager to witness her downfall. As vivid flashbacks reveal moments from her glamorous yet tumultuous career, a tragic narrative unfolds over the last seven days of the influential singer's life - a story filled with dreams, hardship, passion, and disappointment.

Friday 23 May: Film Night - A Complete Unknown

Friday 23th May: A COMPLETE UNKNOWN [15] 141 mins – Drama/Biography

New York, 1961. Against the backdrop of a vibrant music scene and tumultuous cultural upheaval, an enigmatic 19-year-old from Minnesota arrives with his guitar and revolutionary talent, destined to change the course of American music.

He forges intimate relationships with music icons of Greenwich Village on his meteoric rise, culminating in a groundbreaking and controversial performance that reverberates worldwide.

Timothée Chalamet stars and sings as Bob Dylan in the true story behind the rise of one of the most iconic singer-songwriters in history.

Why see it? For Chalamet’s impressive performance.

One of the most complex and convincing interpretations of a real-life musician ever seen on film - imagined in places, perhaps, but nonetheless a cool, charismatic Dylan who should strike a chord with all but the most reticent of his followers.” Radio Times

Rotten Tomatoes gives it an audience rating of 95%. Nominated for 8 Oscars too.

There will be an interval during the showing. Subtitles will be displayed too.

Friday 25 Apr: Film Night - Small Things Like These

Friday 25th April: SMALL THINGS LIKE THESE [12A] 98 mins – Drama

Based on the novella by Claire Keegan. Bill Furlong (Cillian Murphy) is a coal merchant in small-town 1980s Ireland.

Everybody in the town knows that the local convent is one of the infamous Magdalene Laundries, but everybody feigns ignorance because the nuns have far-reaching power and influence in the community.

When Bill, himself the child of a single mother, finds a bruised and shivering young woman locked in the convent coalshed on a bitterly cold December day, he knows that any action on his part will cost him dear.

Why see it? The book was very powerful, and the film has had fantastic reviews.

Cillian Murphy adds another startling performance to his résumé in this stylish production” - The Times (4 stars)

Mielants and his cinematographer Frank van den Eeden beautifully capture rural Ireland in the mid-'80s, in a way that suggests how little has changed since Bill was a boy in the 1950s.” - Radio Times (4 stars)

There will be an interval during the showing. Subtitles will be displayed too.

Thursday 17 Apr: White-tailed Eagles Talk

Talk - Restoring White-tailed Eagles to SE Wales and the Severn Estuary

(postponed from February 27th)

Venue: Pelham Hall bar area
Time: 8pm - post fish and chips
The bar: will be open from 6pm
Entrance: no fee but on-the-night donations to the White-Tailed Eagles project will be welcome.

The white-tailed eagle, also known as the sea eagle, was once a common sight in the UK until the early 20th century. Following an intense and sustained period of persecution, it was completely extirpated. In the 1970s, efforts to restore a population of white-tailed eagles in Scotland began with the release of young birds on the Isle of Rum, marking the beginning of a long-term reintroduction programme.

The last known breeding pair in Wales was lost in the 1830s. White-tailed eagles are a majestic and iconic species with significant cultural and historical significance in Welsh mythology and folklore.

Dr Sophie-lee Williams is a raptor biologist and is the founder of Eagle Reintroduction Wales which was established as part of her PhD at Cardiff University. Sophie has dedicated 8 years of her research career to restore native-lost eagles and now is employed by Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust as the White-tailed Eagle project officer for Wales.

Her job is to use her research to inform, plan and implement a White-tailed Eagle restoration program in Wales in partnership with Gwent Wildlife Trust. The programme is now focusing on restoring this species to Southeast Wales and the Severn Estuary.

4 BAFTAs including Best Film
7 Oscar nominations and Best Adapted Screenplay Award

Based on Robert Harris’s best-selling novel about a papal election. Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) is tasked with running this covert process after the unexpected death of the beloved Pope.

Once the Catholic Church's most powerful leaders have gathered from around the world and are locked together in the Vatican halls, Lawrence uncovers a trail of deep secrets left in the dead Pope's wake - secrets which could shake the foundations of the Church.

Why see it? It’s a gripping drama.

You may think that being locked in a room with a bunch of pompous elderly men deviously attempting to shaft each other wouldn’t be a lot of fun. But trust me on this: Conclave is a blast.” - The Guardian (5 stars)

Friday 21 Feb: Film Night - Paddington in Peru

Friday 21st February: PADDINGTON IN PERU [PG] 106 mins – Comedy/Family

Paddington Bear has been living with the Brown family in London for many years now, but he still feels the tug of his Peruvian roots. Hearing that his Aunt Lucy, now living in the Home for Retired Bears, has been missing him terribly, Paddington and the Browns set off to Darkest Peru, only to discover on arrival that Aunt Lucy has disappeared.

So off they go into the Amazon to find her, accompanied by a boat captain, Hunter Cabot (Antonio Banderas) and his daughter Gina. What could possibly go wrong?

Why see it? Who doesn’t love Paddington?

“Olivia Colman and Antonio Banderas, who follow Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant as the A-list guest stars. Colman plays the nun in charge of Lucy’s ursine retirement home in Peru and is introduced strumming a guitar in a Julie Andrews-style musical sequence. With Malcolm McDowell.

Why see it? A perfect comedy for a gloomy time of year.
