Quiz and Carol Extravaganza
The plan for Thursday 21st December 2024 was meant to be …
6.30 doors open with a complimentary glass of mulled wine and Christmas nibbles
7.00 carols, followed by the Christmas raffle draw in aid of the Old Church
December Pelham Hall 100 Club BIG Draw
Old Church ceiling boss design competition results announced
8.00 Christmas Quiz hosted by a mystery Quiz-Mistress
All the above happened but not necessarily in the right order nor at the right time! Your correspondent does not recall the winners of the raffle but Lyn Harper was writing down names as Sarah Haeffner conducted the draw. We did learn that around £1500 came in from ticket sales, so the Old Church maintenance fund will be swelled magnificently by the evening.
Every 6 months, the Hall’s 100 Club draw awards BIG prizes and this time was no exception with the £258 first prize being the biggest ever awarded. Those who weren’t at the draw can find out the results here.
The competition to select two designs for new bosses for The Old Church, one for the Covid pandemic and one for the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, produced a good selection of entries. Stevie Coutts took us through some of these and announced the winner and the runner-up for both designs:
There was much lusty carol singing after these draws, led superbly by Karen and Tim Dack who, despite microphone misbehaviour, managed to get us all on the right page and, more or less, at the right time!
The turn-out for the evening was magnificent with the number present maybe touching three figures. The bar did well too and a gross income of just under £800 was made, making this one of the most successful evenings in the Hall for a long time. It was rounded off spectacularly when Dame Trotty Trot (aka Geraint Thomas), a recent escapee from our March production of Jack and the Beanstalk, mistressminded a wonderful Christmas Quiz.
And amongst all this, there was a highly deserved presentation to Sally Henley for her selfless contribution to the Hall and especially to the Events Committee, the group responsible for events such as last night’s.
