This report builds on that of November 2025
In July 2026, seven PFG members received training for workgroup leaders from MCC, meaning we now have nine members who can lead workgroups and undertake safety risk assessments. This enables us to operate flexibly and in smaller groups.
We have now recorded over 10 km of paths cleared using manual and power tools since October 2025.
In April, at the Gwent Wildlife Trust’s yard near The Bush Inn, we helped GWT staff install two new pedestrian gates and a heavy gatepost for a 12 ft gate, all as part of a new permissive path across the yard into the GWT fields at Pentwyn Farm. The project was part-funded by TUCC.
In October, a PFG working party was filmed undertaking various clearance activities and installing a new gate. The film will be used by MCC as part of their project to encourage other footpath groups to improve the skills needed to undertake repair and maintenance activities.
This year we have completed 54 separate tasks, logging a total of 377 person-hours of work contributed by 20 volunteers, to whom we are enormously grateful. In addition to the clearance of much seasonal vegetation growth, we have installed 1 fingerpost and 5 waymark posts, plus the above-mentioned gates in the GWT yard. On maintenance, we have made repairs to 2 flights of steps, 3 stiles, and 2 gates. In two locations, old rotten stiles have been replaced with gates.
The reporting period is from 7 October 2025 to 29 October 2026.
The group is grateful to the TUCC and also to MCC for their continuing support of our activities.
The group is always on the lookout for new volunteers to join working parties. If you are interested in helping, whether regularly or occasionally, the best way to find out what is happening is to join the “Footpath Volunteers” WhatsApp group. Contact Bob Scarr to do so.
