From the Monmouthshire Beacon 10th Nov 2017
SATURDAY 28th October saw a major and fun filled celebration of the life of Dylan Thomas.
It was organised by the Art in Penallt team at Pelham Hall in the village. Inspiration for the event came from John Tudgay and the organising guru and chef was Jill Bourchier. Tickets were sold out three weeks in advance of the show and organisers could have doubled the numbers if they had had a bigger hall.
The evening comprised a number of cameo performances in a stage setting redolent of Cwmdonkin Drive in Swansea, where Dylan was born. Readings and music were interspersed with a mouthwatering menu of traditional Welsh fare. The MC, Tom Rigby, ensured that everything went to plan and also appeared with Amanda Jack (Lily Smalls) as Mr and Mrs Thomas. Geraint Thomas did a series of splendid impersonations of Dylan as a young man including reading from his most famous poems and books. The St Michael Singers from Tintern led the music and the singing in which most of the audience joined in.
At the conclusion of the meal and entertainment downstairs in the hall, guests retired upstairs to the bar, which was decked out New York style and with Jude on guitar and singers Ruth and Elaine.
Stephanie Coutts, Chair of Art in Penallt, said afterwards that if the event proved nothing else, it was that local people will turn out in numbers to see and hear the works of Welsh artists, musicians, authors and performers.
